Have you heard of a pandemic? Hmm… a silly question? But, do you really know what a pandemic is? Now, a good question, isn't it?

Because of this current situation of COVID-19, a word pandemic has been stuck to everybody's mouth. WIth or without knowing what a pandemic actually is, you can hear this word from everybody around you.

Do not touch this, wash your hand properly, did you sanitize your hand? Ah, gross, put your mask on. All these things have come to our life so unnaturally and unexpectedly. Now, after several months, it has been a regular task to live with all these things around. Now lets have some learning time.

What is a pandemic?

Pandemic is a worse situation where a large number of people from all around the world are affected by a disease, a virus or any infection. If only the people of one country or a region are affected then, it is not considered as a pandemic but instead an epidemic. But, when an uncountable number of people from scattered places on Earth are affected then, it is referred to as a pandemic.

This is not the first time the world has encountered a pandemic but, there have been several cases in past years where tons of people lost their lives because of some viruses and therefore, it was called a pandemic.

According to WHO, a pandemic occurred in between the year 2009 and 2010 taking lives of around 100,000 to 400,000 people only in the first year. This is referred to as the first pandemic of the 21st century. Influenza A(H1N1) virus was the main cause behind the massive death of the people. Children and young adults were mainly affected by this virus and the vaccine against this virus was developed within the first year of the pandemic.

After Influenza A(H1N1), COVID-19 is the second pandemic of the 21st century. COVID-19 started from China in around mid December. At that time, Wuhan city of China was the only place to come in contact with the virus. But then, COVID-19 started its journey of world tour. By the first week of April, 2020 more than 1 million people were affected by COVID-19 worldwide and by the end of May, 2020 the total number confirmed cases reached almost 6 million. Similarly, there were more than 10 million confirmed cases worldwide by the end of June 2020. The constant, uncontrollable spread of COVID-19 worldwide has caused more than 29 million coronavirus cases with more than 9 million deaths as of today, according to Worldometers.

Symptoms of COVID-19

By now, you probably already have an idea of what the symptoms of COVID-19 are. But still, if you have been lazy to go through it yet, then let's discuss it briefly.

The effects of COVID-19 are not the same among all the people. It mostly depends on age, health condition and the immunity power of the person. But there are some symptoms that are common among a wide range of people. The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are: fever, dry cough and fatigue. There are some symptoms that are not that common but still some people experience them. The less common symptoms of COVID-19 are: sore throat, diarrhoea, headache, conjunctivitis, rashes on skin or discoloration of fingers and toes.

But, as some people are not immune to COVID-19, they might experience some of these serious symptoms like: shortness of breath (having problem breathing), extreme chest pain or pressure and loss of movements or speech.

These symptoms might not be experienced immediately after contacting COVID-19. Instead, it might take up to 14 days, from the day you encountered the virus, for these symptoms to show up. It is very important to visit a doctor or to do a COVID-19 test immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

Prevention of COVID-19

Even though, till today, there has not been any vaccination developed that can completely cure COVID-19, there must be a way to protect ourselves from it. Here are the most effective and very important steps to keep ourselves and others away from COVID-19 attack.

First of all, it is very essential to keep washing your hands from time to time upto 20 seconds. You will hardly find this information anywhere you read about COVID-19, but washing your hands a lot of times in a day can eventually decrease your immunity power. Same thing applies to using a sanitizer. Using sanitizer a lot of times in a day can decrease your immunity power of fighting against diseases and other pathogens. But, this doesn't mean you should not wash your hand or apply sanitizer, but you can surely limit the number of times you do those things by using gloves. By wearing the gloves, you will avoid the direct contact of the virus to your body, the only place where COVID-19 stays active, and you can apply the sanitizer on top of your gloves to stay safe.

But just washing hands and applying sanitizer will not protect you against COVID-19. You must maintain a 6 ft distance with anybody you meet or anyone sneezing and coughing. You should avoid touching our face and cover your face while you cough and sneeze. It is also suggested that you should wear a mask or a face covering. Remember, the purpose of wearing a mask or a face covering is not to protect you from others but, to protect others from you. Therefore, even if you do not care about yourself, do care about others. In addition, staying home when felt unwell and avoiding gathering with many people can certainly help reduce the spread of the virus.
